CONNECTIONS

We are interested in connections, whether it is through people, relationships, food, environment or memories. Our goal is to map out these relationships and piece together common connections while at the same time allowing the viewer to gain their own experience through a combination of audio and video. Like a map every element is connected in one way or another and it is the map that visually and literally displays the parts of the community. A map contains pieces and within those pieces are elements. These elements are interpreted though many different perspectives and ultimately connect all the parts of community. Without these elements and interpretations there would be little to experience. That is the beauty of Contigliano. A town connected by the essence of its elements. As an interactive project we hope the viewer can experience the different perspectives and alter them into their very own experience of Contigliano.

CONNESSIONI

Ci interessano le connessioni, sia che avvengano attraverso le persone, le relazioni, il cibo, l’ambiente, o i ricordi. Il nostro obiettivo è quello di creare una “mappa” di questi rapporti e mettere insieme connessioni comuni, mentre allo stesso tempo permettere allo spettatore di ottenere la sua propria esperienza attraverso una combinazione di suoni ed immagini.
Come una mappa, ogni elemento è collegato ad un altro, in un modo o nell’altro, ed è questa mappa che mostra – visivamente e letteralmente – le parti della comunità. Una mappa contiene dei “pezzi” e all’interno di questi pezzi vi sono degli elementi. Questi elementi vengono interpretati attraverso varie prospettive e alla fine collegano tutti I vari aspetti della comunità. Senza questi elementi ed interpretazioni ci sarebbe poco di cui fare esperienza. Questa è la bellezza di Contigliano. Una cittadina collegata dall’essenza dei suoi elementi. Data l’interattività di questo progetto, speriamo che i visitatori possano “sperimentare” le diverse prospettive ed alterarle a seconda della loro esperienza di Contigliano.

PROCESSES

In the small Italian town of Contigliano, five students from California State University, Chico have been presented with the challenge of creating an interactive installation. By means of modern technology such as RFID tags, computer vision, and midi components, the students were given the opportunity to represent various elements of the town in an artistic manner. Such elements include the food (local delicacies and various meals experienced by the students), interactions with the local community (soccer matches and local hangout spots), and the contrasting appearances of new and old structures (the modern renovations of the old city compared to the brand new houses in the surrounding area). With a large emphasis on interactivity and sophisticated analysis of both visual and audio data, the students represented “the pieces” of Contigliano that had the most impact on them during their stay.

PROCESSI

A cinque studenti della California State University di Chico è stata presentata la “sfida” di creare un’installazione interattiva nella cittadina italiana di Contigliano. Attraverso l’uso di tecnologie moderne come il Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), computer vision, e MIDI, gli studenti hanno avuto la possibilità di rappresentare diversi elementi della cittadina in maniera artistica. Tali elementi comprendono il cibo (delizie locali e vari piatti provati dagli studenti), l’interazione con la comunità locale (partite di calcio e “gite fuori porta”), e il constrasto tra nuove e antiche strutture (il restauro della città vecchia confrontato con la costruzione di nuove case nelle zone sottostanti). Con un’enfasi sull’interattività e grazie ad una sofisticata analisi di dati visivi e sonori, gli studenti hanno rappresentato “i pezzi” di Contigliano che li hanno maggiormente colpiti durante la loro permanenza in città.

PERSPECTIVES

To see something from another person’s point of view adds a deeper understanding to one’s experience of it. By looking at Contigliano through the eyes, ears, and thoughts of other people, you can see the city in a new way. Each person has a unique experience with the city, whether they have lived there their whole life, or are visiting it for the first time. Connecting all these pieces reveals relationships between places, people, and their memories making it possible to see the real heart of the city.

PROSPETTIVE

Vedere qualcosa dal punto di vista di un’altra persona aggiunge una comprensione più profonda all’esperienza di ciascuno. Guardando Contigliano con gli occhi, le orecchie, e i pensieri di altre persone, uno può vedere la città in modo nuovo. Ogni persona ha un’esperienza unica della città, sia che uno abbia vissuto qui per tutta la vita o sia in visita per la prima volta. Collegare tutti questi pezzi rivela relazioni tra i luoghi, le persone, e i loro ricordi, e permette di vedere il vero cuore della città.

ELEMENTS

Life is an experiment of elements combined to create authentic places of memories. Without the exploration of these elements one might never find the true meaning of a place or space. To understand this relationship one must experiment with various elements to create a connection of a past memory found somewhere deep in the soul. The right ingredients to entertain this idea are found simply in the natural environment that surrounds us. When the past is revived through a simple element of taste a deep connection is made with the soul. And if we look inside, we suddenly find something bigger than before. Carefully observing food in a new environment creates new memories, but it also brings forth past memories. A force of change is made to the individual and a new identity is created. Contigliano is our experiment of elements.

ELEMENTI

La vita è un esperimento di elementi combinati per creare autentici luoghi di memorie. Senza l’esplorazione di questi elementi uno potrebbe non trovare mai il vero significato di un luogo o uno spazio. Per capire questa relazione occorre sperimentare con vari elementi, per creare alla fine una connessione con una memoria passata e ritrovata in fondo all’anima. I giusti ingredienti per sviluppare quest’idea si ritrovano nell’ambiente naturale che ci circonda. Quando il passato rivive grazie ad un semplice sapore, avviene una connessione profonda con l’anima. E se ci guardiamo dentro, all’improvviso scopriamo qualcosa di più grande. Osservare il cibo con attenzione in un nuovo ambiente permette di creare nuove memorie, ma anche di avvicinarsi a vecchi ricordi. Un cambiamento “forzato” avviene nell’individuo, ed una nuova identità viene creata. Contigliano è il nostro esperimento di elementi.

EXPERIENCES

The opportunity to participate in and observe (mostly observe, perhaps) this endeavor has allowed me two unique experiences. First, was to connect to my ancestors all of which, one generation removed, were born in Italy. None, to my knowledge, ever lived in Contigliano since they are from all over Italy: they lived both north and south of this unique, diverse, and ever-changing country. Second, the two weeks here have allowed me to become very familiar with the skills and talents contained in the field of multi media arts.

ESPERIENZE

L’opportunità di partecipare ed osservare (principalmente osservare, chissà) questo progetto ha reso possibili due esperienze personali molto significative. Innanzitutto, la possibilità di creare una connessione con i miei antenati i quail, fino alla mia generazione, sono tutti nati in Italia. Che io sappia, nessuno ha mai vissuto a Contigliano, ed erano sparsi per tutta la penisola: hanno vissuto tra il nord e il sud di questo paese così costantemente cangiante. In secondo luogo, le due settimane qui mi hanno permesso di creare una certa familiarità con le capacità e i talenti necessari nel campo delle arti multimediali.

LIGHTSCAPES

CIRO (TOM):
Today a special lecture was given by an architect from Verona who also is a Professor at the University of Florence. G. Elia Perbellini presented his Theatre of Memory in the Image of Botticelli’s “Primavera.”

A welcome form the mayor of Contigliano preceded the presentation by Professor Perbellini.

The Professor’s presentation was the content of a research project he started in 1999. It was an excellent effort to combine the modern and ancient city of Florence, stone and cyberspace. The painting “Primavera” contains many concepts and was tied to the mapped layout of Florence. The painting contains the Three Graces which have been creatively been depicted by Salvatore Casa of Chico in several of his works. The focus of “Primavera” is the presentation of the dresses of Venus that can correspond to the major routes in Roman Florence. The head of Venus is oriented on the dome of the cathedral.

The analogy evolved into an extensive and exceptional lighting project using lightscapes. Layers of Florence were emphasized with a different color of light with the colors tied to the painting. The light changes the appearance of the ancient structures while preserving the structures themselves. The light was also used as a signal to guide tourists around Florence. Furthermore the lighting on the walls of Florence could be used to convey information and for marketing. The marketing helped finance the very exceptional displays.

Professor Perbellini also presented some of his other exceptional lighting efforts at Forte di Sant’ Andres and with other features around Venice, Italy.

BRAINSTORMING

MEGAN:
We have been in Contigliano for just about a week now, and we have definitely noticed that food is an important part of the daily lives of the people in Italy. As the saying goes “In the US we eat to live, but in Italy we live to eat.”

During our brainstorming session today, we decided that we would use food as a vehicle to discover the city. Food: ingredients, recipes, stories, relationships, memories tied to specific tastes and dishes which are tied to places. In Italy, meal time is story time, a time for great discussion, and an excuse to spend time with others. This is why it is such a great medium for us to explore Contigliano through. We won’t just be getting a list of what people eat, we will be getting the whole story about life in this city.
