FOLLOWING ST. FRANCIS' STEPS...

MEGAN:
This afternoon we went to see some very old monasteries and churches associated with St. Francis Assisi (guided by our lovely tour guide Rita). The views from each place were amazing, and you could see the whole valley that once was under water. Rita pointed out that the land that is sticking up in the middle of the valley looks like a crocodile, and that when it was under water, it looked like a whale.

When we were in one of the churches, there was a huge collection of nativity scenes made by various people. They were all very unique and creative, and it was fun to see so many interpretations. Some were made of wood, some of fabric, some of paper, some of glass … one was even made of pasta. My favorite one was a very deep shadow box that required you to look through the street to the end where there is a door, and through the door to the nativity. Because only one person can see it at a time, it makes you feel like you have just witnessed a secret, or something very special.

The country is beautiful and we saw a great part of the religious history today.
