"NATIVE" BBQ

MATT:
For dinner tonight, we accompanied a local friend, Jean Piero, to a barbecue in the mountains above Contigliano with some of his friends. After picking us up from the hostel around 7:30pm, we traveled another half an hour to a beautiful barbecue pit outside of town. After collecting ample firewood from the surrounding area, we built a raging fire to cook sausages and shish-ka-bobs. To start, we sampled some white wine that Jean Piero’s family had made. After an hour or so of gossiping (and drinking), we began to eat some “risotto ai funghi porcini” (rice with porcini mushrooms) that one of Jean Piero’s friends had been cooking all the while (on a small camping burner). The evening continued with lots of conversation, excellent food, and both Italian and American music coming from one of the cars. Tonight was a truly unique Italian experience-any given tourist would never be able to do such a thing without the assistance of one of the locals.
